Overview of Hit Song Central's
Songwriting & Music Production Process:
1) Writing: First, we meet at our studio and write music and lyrics. Then, we lay down a click track (electronic drum beat), decide on the tempo and keys of the songs and record rough guitars, bass, and vocals. Everyone gets a rough CD to take home and we live with it for a week or so. At our next meeting, we'll discuss any suggested changes to both music and lyrics.
2) Tracking: Tracking is where we begin the process of recording "keeper" material (the musical parts that we'll likely keep for the final recording). It primarily involves writing keeper guitar, bass, and drum parts. Then, before we actually record the parts, we make sure all of the tones (sounds) are correct for the particular song or songs. Once we have obtained keeper parts and tones, we record and save them within their own Pro Tools session.
3) Vocals: After we have tracked the basic parts of the song, we are ready for the lead vocalist to sing their parts. We make sure we have the finished lyrics, and the vocalist must perform at their highest level. Scott and Natalia will sign off on the vocals when they are satisfied that the best performance has been achieved.
4) Overdubbing: Overdubbing is the process where we begin to add more instruments and vocals to the song. These typically include: background vocals, additional guitar parts, tambourine and other percussion instruments, keyboards (like piano, organ or cool synth sounds) and other additional instrumentation. Some of the overdubbed parts may not make it onto the final recording, but it is good to have them in case we need them.
5) Pre-mixing: Premixing is where Scott will open the song session and begin to organize all of the source material. The first hour or so is just calling up reverbs, delays, and other special recording effects.
6) Mixing: This is the process where Scott gets all the final tracks and blends them all together in such a way that it becomes pleasing to the ear and the music begins to sound like a radio-ready hit song. Generally, the mixing process extends over a period of days. Note: when a song is mixed, everything is in stone and cannot be changed. For instance, a vocal cannot be brought up or down. Or, the drums and guitars cannot be louder or softer. However, these changes can be made if a Remix is necessary.
7) Remixing: A remix is the process where Scott returns to the song session and makes changes, then mixes the song again.
8) Mastering: Mastering is the process where we give our Mastering Lab the final mixes. They are then loaded onto a computer program. The Mastering engineer is the last chance for any fixes such as: noise, clicks, pops, balancing the stereo image, or adding compression and/or other FX, as to make the product comply with the industry standard (radio-ready master quality). All HSC products comply with, or surpass, this benchmark.
9) Signing off: After the Masters are complete, we all get copies and have a good listen. If anyone can make a strong enough argument for a change in the final sound, the Mastering engineer will be happy to try it. If not, we are finished with Music Production.
10) Delivery: The finished songs are then delivered in multiple formats, which include, but are not limited to, WAV, AIFF, BWF, MP3, etc.
Approximate time:
